Blepharoplasty, or Eyelid Surgery, is a surgery meant to repair droopy eyelids by removing excess skin, muscle, and fat. It’s also called an eye lift. The muscles supporting the eyelids weaken and stretch as we age. Consequently, excess fat may accumulate above and below the eyelids, resulting in sagging eyebrows, droopy upper lids, and bags under the eyes. A sagging eyelid can not only reduce your appearance, but also your peripheral vision (side vision), especially your upper and outer peripheral vision. These vision problems can be reduced or eliminated with blepharoplasty, making your eyes look younger. There may be a need for a blepharoplasty if there is: Droopy or baggy upper eyelids An excess of upper lid skin that impairs peripheral vision Wrinkles and extra skin on the lower lids Bags under your eyes Puffiness caused by fatty deposits on your eyelids The eyelid aging process With age, the skin's elasticity gradually decreases. As a result of a lack of elasticity and gravity pulling on the upper and lower eyelids, excess skin accumulates. Bulges and wrinkles on the lower eyelid are caused by excess skin. It is sometimes difficult to see through the upper eyelids because an extra fold of skin hangs over eyelashes. Bulges in the upper and lower eyelids may also be caused by the fat cushioning the eyeball from the skull. Fat bulges into the lids as the thin membrane holding it in place weakens with age.
